Background

The client is a leading provider of mobile devices, including mobile phones and accessories, PC cards and other value-added services, that serves the emerging and existing needs of its clients in more than 100 countries and territories around the world.

Challenge

The client wanted to launch their new product (PC card) in the markets of mainland China, Taiwan and Thailand simultaneously. They were seeking a regional supplier who could provide a "one-stop" solution, i.e. localize the software and documentation, including SW, OLH and manuals, and test its functions and compatibility with local mobile networks. The project was very demanding at every stage—translating, engineering, DTP, and testing.

Implementation

To fulfill the high requirements within the tight schedule while at the same time interacting with the workflow (SW build and product release) on the client's side, we implemented the project with the following solutions:

  We used SmartTermTM, a tool developed by the BEC technical team to extract and maintain glossaries, to create an English master glossary, and translated it into each target language as the baseline for the whole project.
  Led by our Global Project Manager, three teams located in Beijing, Taiwan, and Bangkok worked simultaneously. All teams shared the same workflow, master glossary, query reports, etc.
  We consulted with local wireless service providers for necessary parameters and detailed settings, tested the functionality of the product, and took all screenshots needed for the OLH and user manuals.

Conclusion

  The products are scientifically, linguistically and culturally correct and appealing to the end users in the target locales, and were released on schedule.
  Compared to other ways this job could have been done, there was a 30% cost savings for the client from our "one-stop" solution.
