Banking System

Background

Our client is a Fortune 500 company, provides solutions and relevant services to the financial and health benefits industries. The company serves more than 17,000 clients worldwide and is the leading provider of core processing solutions for U.S. banks, credit unions and savings and loan associations.

The product is a comprehensive retail banking application, with functions for automatically managing customer relationships, developing new products, processing transactions, and financial management. It forms the basis for multi-channel product delivery and service strategy.

Challenge

The software localization for this product was more than simply the translation of the user interface, online help and documentation for bank products and services, concepts and business modules. EC needed to work closely with the client and the banking industry to determine the differences between Western and Chinese banking systems and to modify the related content to meet the requirements of Chinese banks.

The system runs on IBM AIX400, UNIX, and Windows. Fortunately, we already had software localization experience in all of these operating systems (OS), because we had to deliver the localized application and reference materials on a very tight deadline. The total word count of this project (including user interface, online help, manuals and brochures) was about four million English words. Therefore, if we wanted to finish this project successfully, we had to meet the following challenges:

Additional investment on tools to localize IBM AS400 applications
Huge volume required a big team to work within a short turn-around time
The specialized contents required team members with relevant background and support from subject-matter experts in the fields of finance and accounting.
  Software testing after localization.

Implementation

As an experienced and proactive provider in the localization industry, EC is willing to spare no effort to meet a client's specific requirements. The following were the implementation procedures used on this project.

Purchased more than 20 licenses of TTT/PC to localize IBM AS400 applications.
Arranged for engineers to learn how to use this software, and then provided technical training and support to the team members.
Selected qualified translators among our staff to work exclusively within the same team (up to 25-member in-house team and three consultants) to ensure translation consistency.
Prepared a product-specific glossary. EC worked closely with the client to adapt and standardize extensive glossaries.
Utilized numerous subject-matter experts on this project who provided professional knowledge support and linguistic quality assurance.
Performed on-site LQA on demo application to ensure the translation and GUI layout quality.

Conclusion

Through the well-executed localization solution, tremendous effort and considerable teamwork, this project was successfully implemented and finished on schedule.
